Chicago Spire construction set to begin this month...

Yesterday the Chicago City Council approved the zoning changes that will allow for construction to begin on the 2,000 foot tall Chicago Spire. Before now the construction of the tower was still up in the air due to a zoning height limit of 500 feet.

When finished in 2010, the Chicago Spire will become the tallest building in North America - surpassing the 1,451-foot Sears Tower in Chicago and the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower in NYC.

The Chicago Spire will be located on the north bank of the Chicago River just west of Lake Shore Drive and will be coupled with a new park.

Hmmm what good would come of 2000' tall building the shape of a vibrator, other than to be the butt (no pun intended) of all jokes for the building, it's ocupants, and the City. *lol*

"the construction of the tower was still up in the air" - I love it.

Looks like the world's largest drill bit. No doubt, pretty soon everyone in Chicago will be able to recite from memory the poem about the man with the corkscrew cock.

And before anyone says anything -- the bulding is located at 400 -- not 420 -- North Lakeshore Drive.

Okay, am I the ONLY person who thinks this is an attractive building? It's a hell of a lot better that all those boring rectangular skyscrapers.

I think its pretty. =3 However, is this park going to be where that scumbag of a mayor destroyed a valuable and beautiful airport? Daley-fuck has been saying he's going to build a park where Meigs Field used to be ever since he bulldozed the runway in the middle of the night!

*steps off soapbox*

No... it's a different location.

The area where the mayor helped speed up the process of transforming the old airport into a park (that was actually always owned by Chicago Park District) actually *is* a park now called Northerly Island... and has been for a while. Just fyi.
